Chateau Raymond Lafon Sauternes 2011 375ml

$75.00

Château Raymond-Lafon Sauternes is primarily made from Sémillon (about 80%) and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. These grapes are meticulously hand-picked, often in multiple parcels through the vineyard, to ensure only those affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) are selected. The wine undergoes fermentation and aging in oak barrels, with a portion of the barrels being renewed each year. This aging process typically lasts between 18 to 24 months, allowing the wines to develop their distinctive character.

Renowned for their richness, complexity, and longevity, Château Raymond-Lafon wines frequently showcase flavors of honey, dried fruits, citrus, and floral notes. They are well-balanced, with a harmonious blend of sweetness and acidity, making them a standout choice among Sauternes wines.

Château Raymond-Lafon, established in 1850 and located in the prestigious Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, and is a direct neighbour to the legendary Chateau d’Yquem. The estate covers approximately 18 hectares, primarily planted with Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Its unique terroir of gravel, clay, and limestone contributes to the distinctive flavors of honey, dried fruits, citrus, and floral notes found in its wines. The grapes are meticulously hand-picked in multiple passes to ensure only those affected by noble rot are used, followed by fermentation and aging in oak barrels for 18 to 24 months. Missing out on a classification of Sauternes and Barsac back in the 1855 has been attributed primarily because it was only 5 years old at the time, but Château Raymond-Lafon has garnered a reputation for producing wines that rival many classified growths.

In 1972, the Meslier family acquired the estate, with Jean-Pierre Meslier at the helm. Before purchasing Château Raymond-Lafon, Jean-Pierre Meslier was the Manager at the legendary Château d'Yquem from 1963 through to 1989, and after he retired at d’Yquem he continued to make wine a Raymond Lafon using the same methods and is expertise and dedication to quality have elevated Raymond-Lafon's status in the wine world.
