Woodlawn Waverly Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023
Savoury, refined and beautifully composed, the 2023 Waverley Vineyard Pinot Noir is a distinctly site-driven expression from northern Tasmania.
Dark cherry and raspberry lead into layers of spice, dried herbs, forest floor and subtle earthy complexity. The palate is finely structured, with sour cherry and plum fruit, firm yet silky tannins and bright, energetic acidity carrying the wine through a long, poised finish.
There is a lovely sense of restraint here — less about richness and more about detail, freshness and savoury complexity. A Pinot Noir that rewards a little time in the glass and should continue to develop beautifully with bottle age.
Winemaking
Waverley Vineyard sits just east of Launceston and is influenced more by the surrounding mountains than by the Tamar River. The vineyard was planted in 2005 and has been farmed by winemaker Ricky Evans since 2015.
The vineyard includes Dijon clones 114 and 115 along with a later-ripening clone that retains naturally high acidity. Around 30% whole bunch is used in the final blend, followed by approximately 11 months maturation in French oak, predominantly second- and third-fill barrels.
Food Match
Excellent with roast duck, mushroom and thyme risotto, lamb loin, venison or slow-roasted pork. Its savoury profile, fine tannins and bright acidity also make it a natural partner for earthy dishes featuring mushrooms, lentils or roasted root vegetables.
