Joe has been working in the wine industry for over 30 years.
“Budburst was always a bit of a dream, but then Covid hit and lockdowns came.
I was in my late 50s and my job of selling wine to Restaurants, was made redundant. I decided the time was right to create the wine club type business that I’ve always wanted. I had nothing to lose”
The 90’s were my foundation years and after completing my Diploma in Hotel Management, I worked as a Sommelier, managed a wine store and also coordinated a wine club, with over 2000 members. I then spent about 20 years working for various wine companies in a sales capacity. It’s been a journey that has allowed me to work with some of Australia’s best wine portfolios, conversing directly with Sommeliers, Winemakers, Vignerons, Wine Directors and Retailers, everyday of the week.
I used to write for the Wine Club back in the old days and loved it. In 2015, I decided to start writing again, by creating an Instagram profile @Lenckdrank and before I knew it, there were more than 15 thousand people following and engaging with my wine stories and reviews. I felt it was a natural transition to establish the Budburst Wine Collective in 2020, as an avenue for my friends to easily access the wines I personally enjoyed and wrote about.
Six years later and these days I am full time working in the business, which continues to evolve and grow through our online presence and our variety of the different types of wine events, that we hold each month. Behind the scenes we also continue to evolve to keep up with maintaining service levels for our growing business. In November 2025 we finally moved out of my shed and into a nearby Logistics Warehouse, which allows for fast local delivery service, as well as getting shipments out quickly for further afield as well.
The wines in our shop is certainly a reflection of myself. They are wines that I enjoy drinking and hence my main focus is on small and medium sized wineries. Being located in Hobart, means that we do have a significant range of Tasmanian Wines but by the same token, there's a big wine world out there and as a passionate lover of good wines, no matter where they come from, means Budburst Wine Collective covers a broad range of wines, for all to enjoy.
