What is a Grower Champagne?

Boll & Cie is a standout Grower Champagne that I had the pleasure of tasting at the Tyson Stelzer Taste Champagne in Sydney a couple of months ago, and it immediately left an impression.

To understand what makes it special, it helps to look at the difference between a traditional Champagne House and a Grower Champagne. Large Champagne Houses often supplement fruit from their own vineyards by purchasing grapes from growers, allowing them to produce millions of bottles to meet global demand. In contrast, Grower Champagnes are typically much smaller and more boutique, with the producer controlling every step of the process — from vine to bottle.

This hands-on approach often results in wines that are more expressive of their vineyard and vintage, offering a sense of place that’s harder to achieve at scale.

Boll & Cie was a highlight at our recent Champagne Day tasting — a perfect example of the precision, character, and individuality that Grower Champagne can deliver.
