When Riesling grows up

When Riesling grows up

One of the great things about Riesling is watching what happens to it with a little time in bottle.

🍇

Quiet Mutiny Charlotte’s Elusion Riesling 2023 is made by Greer Carland, a born-and-bred Tasmanian winemaker who grew up around her parents’ vineyard in the Derwent Valley.

🍷

After years making wine for others, Greer launched her own label, Quiet Mutiny, with the 2017 vintage — and over the years she has built a pretty strong reputation for Riesling in particular.

🍇

The name Quiet Mutiny comes from the story of Charlotte Badger, who was aboard the Venus when it was seized at Port Dalrymple in 1806. The ship was then sailed across the Tasman to New Zealand, where Charlotte and her child were put ashore in the Bay of Islands.

Charlotte’s story of rebellion and choosing her own destiny struck a chord with Greer when she decided it was time to step away and make wines under her own name.

Hence Charlotte’s Elusion.

🍋

And this 2023 is now becoming particularly interesting.

🍇

The bright lime, grapefruit and floral characters of young Riesling are still there, but with a few years of bottle age it is beginning to develop those lovely honeysuckle and subtle honeyed characters that make mature Riesling so appealing.

Importantly, it still has the acidity and structure to keep developing for several more years.

So, if you’re one of those people who loves older Riesling, you’re in luck — somebody has already done a couple of years of the waiting for you.

And if you normally drink Riesling young, this is a really nice opportunity to see what happens when you give it some time.Quiet Mutiny Charlotte’s Elusion Riesling 2023 is made by Greer Carland, a born-and-bred Tasmanian winemaker who grew up around her parents’ vineyard in the Derwent Valley.
